Gender Office and Female Education Forum

A brief history

Adama University's Gender office was established in 2003 to address peculiar needs of the university's female students. Since then, it has been serving as a focal point for the Ministry of Education Gender Affairs Office, and provided a number of services for female students. The office has been headed by female academic staffs in different times (the head is responsible for coordinating different voluntary activities with a team of expatriates and local faculty members). For the last three years a full time employee was assigned to the office as a "gender expert" who undertakes the various activities of the office with the help of gender committee members (all are females academic staff).

The office has been performing activities such as:

  • Organizing awareness raising trainings, forums and events for students and staff
  • Providing  advisory support on academic and social matters for female students
  • Organizing tutorial programs for female students on selected courses
  • Facilitating study rooms and enhancing access to study materials for female students
  • Addressing special needs of female students (e.g facility of hairdressings)
  • Organizing clubs (e.g girls club)
  • Working with external organizations in the area of gender equity (e.g Ratson and Path Finder)
